Light tunnels from planistar are used wherever shiny objects need to be illuminated diffusely and without shadows. Thanks to their tunnel shape, they are easier to integrate into production systems than conventional LED domes.

The special feature of our light tunnels is that the surfaces really light up actively and are not just illuminated indirectly as with a light dome.
The tunnel shape allows the test piece to be fully immersed in the tunnel, so the desired lighting effect is fully achieved.

Light tunnels from planistar have 3 actively illuminated surfaces with edge lighting and a curved diffuser. This creates a kind of light dome that emits very uniform and diffuse light onto the test objects. The cut-out is individually adapted to the inspection task, camera position and lens.

Due to its design, the tunnel can be adapted in length, width and height to the mechanical requirements and the camera distance. This is not possible with a conventional light dome.

The tunnel lighting can be triggered without power by an optocoupler switching input. This reacts to every rising edge from 5 V TTL to 24 V PLC.
No further external controllers are required, everything is built into the light.

For a wide range of applications in machine vision, the tunnel domes can be equipped with different shades of white, but also with monochrome light colors from approx. 380 to 940 nm. IR and UV are implemented in a matrix arrangement due to the technology.

Lighting technology

Most of our lighting works with edge lighting and a light guide. As planistar had the patent for the edge lighting of light sources and light distribution using a dot grid, we also have the knowledge to calculate and produce any size.

Our surface light guides have the advantage of maintaining uniform light distribution over the entire service life. The failure of an LED row in the edge area has virtually no effect on the uniformity in the measuring range. With a matrix system, on the other hand, a dark spot is immediately visible.

For some applications, however, a conventional matrix system is more suitable. Thanks to our sophisticated design of these lights, we can also supply you with devices with good homogeneity and very high light intensity. These reflected lights for image processing are usually very bright, making it possible to reduce motion blur with short exposure times.

Direct vs. indirect light

A light dome is often illuminated indirectly via the bottom edge of the housing. However, this results in a lot of light loss. In addition, direct light can enter the lens through the camera opening.

With tunnel lighting from planistar, on the other hand, we work with 3 area lights and a curved diffuser to shine directly onto the test object. In this way, the test object is illuminated more brightly.

From small to large

With the help of our machinery, we are able to produce both very small and very large LED lighting.

The example shows a light tunnel with a length of 1800 mm and a long slot for a line scan camera.

Thanks to the diversity of our production options and the high level of vertical integration, we can always adapt to the conditions of our customers' image processing tasks and offer an optimum solution for all aspects of lighting.

Dome lighting as the ideal solution - so much for the theory

A conventional hemispherical light dome is an ideal solution.

So much for the theory. Now we come to the practice:

Dome lighting only develops its full lighting effect when the test item is immersed in the illuminated dome. This is precisely where the problem lies. In most cases, this is very difficult or even impossible to achieve. If a dome is mounted at a distance above the test part, the lighting effect is similar to that of a conventional and cheaper surface light.
In addition, a conventional dome cannot be produced in every dimension. The diameter automatically determines the height and therefore the camera distance. Here, the user must rely on standard dimensions and adapt completely to the dimensions.

The light tunnel from planistar, on the other hand, can be realized in any dimension for any working distance. The tunnel shape makes it ideal for mounting over a conveyor belt.
